For professionals and universities

Professional supervision

Supervision provided by a qualified social worker with experience across statutory child protection, family and domestic violence, and youth work.

Field education supervision for social work students

For university field education teams and agencies hosting a student without a qualified social worker on staff. Where a host agency has no suitable social work field educator, an external social worker provides formal professional supervision while the agency supervises day-to-day learning.

What is provided

  • Formal structured supervision at the AASW ratio of 1.5 hours per 35 hours of placement, with at least half delivered one-to-one.
  • Supervision in the evenings or on weekends by arrangement, as well as during business hours.
  • Completion of the university's assessment tool and attendance at mid and final progress meetings.
  • A written supervision agreement at the start of placement.
  • In person across Perth, or online.

Field educator eligibility

  • Qualified social worker, Master of Social Work (University of Western Australia).
  • Member of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
  • Over two years full-time post-qualifying practice experience, meeting the AASW field education requirement for field educators.

University field education coordinators are welcome to make contact to discuss placements and fees.

External professional supervision

For practising social workers and allied practitioners, and agencies without a senior social worker internally. External supervision gives practitioners a confidential, reflective space outside their own line management.

Professional supervision can contribute towards AASW continuing professional development supervision requirements. Practitioners should confirm this against their own requirements.

Who it suits

  • Social workers in child protection, family and domestic violence, youth work and community services.
  • Practitioners who are the only social worker in their organisation.
  • Workers whose line manager is not a social worker.
  • Agencies purchasing supervision for one or more staff.

Format

  • Individual supervision, usually monthly or fortnightly.
  • Group supervision for teams by arrangement.
  • In person across Perth, or online.
  • Evening appointments available; weekend appointments by arrangement.
  • A written supervision agreement covering purpose, confidentiality and its limits.
